The niece of George Albert GUERTIN, the 3rd Roman Catholic Bishop of Manchester, NH, Rita had been a member of the Sisters of Mercy for 72 years. She was known in religion as Sr. George. A graduate of Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett, NH, she obtained an M.A. in French from Boston College & did further studies in French at the "Institut Catholique" in Paris, FRANCE.

Sr. George taught languages (principally French & Spanish) for 35 years at the high school and; college levels. She was a teacher at St. Joseph High School for Girls in Manchester, NH and at Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Nashua and Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett. From 1957 until 1978 she taught French, Spanish, and Latin, and was head of the department of modern languages at Mount Saint Mary College. After the school closed in 1978, Sr. George worked at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH where she was an assistant to the chaplain, making pastoral visits to patients. For 5 years she volunteered as a tutor at the Hillsborough House of Correction in Manchester, where she taught English to French- and Spanish-speaking men. She also tutored local students in French. In 1989, she moved to Warde Health Center in Windham, N.H. There she helped in the center’s gift shop, and visited and prayed with the residents.

Sr. George died 2011-12-07 at the Warde Health Center, 21 Searles Rd., Windham, NH. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, NH.

He undertook his Classical Studies in Sherbrooke, QC and entered St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA. In 1892-12-17 he was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood. In 1907-03-19 he was appointed by Pope Pius X as the 3^rd Bishop of the diocese of Manchester, NH, thus becoming the first alumnus of St. John’s Seminary to be named a Bishop. He died 1931-08-06.

After having completed the required Classical and Theological studies in Montréal, he was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood on May 30, 1948.

As his first assignment, René AUDET was named assistant pastor at St-Paul parish in Rouyn, QC from 1948 to 1951. Thereafter, he accepted several other activities and studies. He was eventually ordained Bishop on July 31, 1963. On February 22, 1968, he became the 4^th Bishop of the diocese of Joliette, QC where he remained till retirement.

Msgr. AUDET died at the Ignace-Bourget Residence in Montréal, QC on June 12, 2011 and will be buried in Joliette, QC.

René also has a brother, Maurice, who is a Roman Catholic priest in Montréal, QC

The first church was built in 1840 and was replaced by a larger one in 1878. A considerable increase in the Roman Catholic population led to its replacement by a 3rd church in 1894, but it was damaged by fire in 1895. Repairs on the church were completed in 1905. Yet another fire, this one suspicious, ravaged the church in 2009.

Despite the community's desire to rebuild the church once again, the parish's present finances are insufficient. Therefore, the church will be completely demolished this year...2011.

Albert GUAY killed his wife, Rita MOREL

the son of Joseph Arthur GUAY and Marie Éva LANDRY,

Albert married Rita MOREL (Wilfrid+Imelda DIONNE)

on 1941-08-30 in St-Roch parish, Québec City, QC.

Albert earned a living as a jeweler in the city and all went well with the marriage, or so it seemed.

Eventually, Albert met Marie-Ange ROBITAILLE, a 17 year old, with whom he fell in love. In order to continue legally with this relationship, Albert decided that he had to get rid of his wife, Rita. If she died, he would be the beneficiary of her $10,000 life insurance. This would cover his debts and he would be free to marry Marie-Ange.

Having contrived of a plan, Albert talked about it to Marguerite RUEST-PITRE, who, in turn, requested the help of Généreux RUEST. The latter had access to sticks of dynamite; therefore, he made a bomb using the sticks and a timer. Albert then planted the bomb in a suitcase that would be placed in the baggage compartment of a plane that his wife, Rita, would be taking to go to Baie Comeau, QC.

On September 9, 1949, Rita MOREL and 17 other passengers boarded the DC-3 plane of Quebec Airways left from Ancienne Lorette, QC heading for Baie Comeau. The plane blew up in mid-air above Sault-au-Cochon, about 70 km north of Québec City, QC.

On Septembre 23, 1949 Albert GUAY was arrested for these murders and sentenced to death in February 1950. He was hanged January 19, 1951 at Bordeaux prison in Montréal, QC. Généreux RUEST, who helped Albert make the bomb, was hanged at the same prison on July 25, 1952 as was the 3rd accomplice, Marguerite RUEST PITRE. She was the last woman to be hhanged in CANADA.

"C'est la vie" is a 5 minute ENGLISH radio program during which Connie LEMONDE reads the biography of a local resident of Rhode Island. She interviews the person and then writes-up the bio for radio transmission. The French title of the program is due to the fact that many interviewees are of French-Canadian descent, as is Connie. Some of the subjects are identified at the end of the program while others have asked to remain anonymous since all are living in the area and their stories are quite personal.

By sharing these biographies, Connie wishes to show that adversities as well as good times are part of everyone's life, and that we can benefit from them eventually, at least with hind-sight.

Located near the Québec Art Museum, the city has purchased the Monastery. The demolition will begin on March 21 & should be concluded by July of this year. The city intends to build an addition to the Museum by using this property.

Benedictine Convent in Mont-Laurier, QC

will be demolished.

The Benedictine Sisters arrived in Mont-Laurier in 1934. Today they number 15 women, who will be relocated, although their destination has not yet been disclosed. There are few, if any, vocations; therefore, the only solution is the destruction of their present monastery. The sale of the bluiding & its grounds began in November 2010. The sisters must vacate the monastery by April 2011.

In the Brome-Missisquoi region, the following churches have been sold (date within parentheses):

1) East Farnham Anglican Church (1984),

2) Brome Church (1985),

3) Brill United Church (circa 1987),

4) St-Andrew's Anglican Church (1994),

5) Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc (1998),

6) Church of the Good Shepperd (1999),

7) Brigham United Church (2003),

8) Sainte-Sabine (2006),

9) St. John Anglican Church (2006),

10) Saint-Pierre-de-Véronne (2007),

11) Saint-Ignace de Stanbridge (2008),

Among these churches, 18 now belong to private citizens.

In the Haut-Richelieu region, Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens church in enise-en-Québec was sold to the city in 2009, but masses are still held in the building for the faithful.

In the Haute-Yamaska area, the city of Granby purchased
Assomption church in 2004 et Saint-Benoît church in 2008. Both are used as Community Centers. Saint-Joseph church now belong to the CSSS (Social Services Agency) of the Haute-Yamaska since 2005, but masses are still being celebrated in that building.

Since the year 2000, St-Isaac-Jogues is the 19th Roman Catholic church to have been closed in the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil, QC. The sale to Rodin Construction of Sainte-Julie, QC was finalized in november 2010. The city then changed the zoning of the area; therefore, the church will be destroyed in a few days (February 2011) and will be replaced by 6 apartment buildings.

The closing of so many churches is destroying our ancestral heritage and is making our genealogical research all the more complicated. So, where do the church records go? I don't have the answer...

It's with great sadness that I've just received the news of the closure of 2 more Québec, French, Roman Catholic churches. If we don't continue researching our QC ancestry and taking pictures, very few ancestral buildings will be left for us to discover.

An historic building located at the corner of Viger & St-Denis Streets in the city, the church will be demolished to make way for the new hospital (Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal: CHUM). We are told that the bell and steeple will be kept as will be the stained glass windows.

QC churches to be demolished

Parish administrators have recently voted for the demolition of 2 Trois-Rivières, QC Roman Catholic churches pending the approval of the local Archbishop.
St-Philippe parish was founded in 1909 & St-François-d'Assise parish in 1927 since there is no longer sufficient attendance to warrant their upkeep. It is possible that the land on which they stand will be sold & the churches will be replaced by apartment buildings or condominiums.
If you have ancestors from these parishes & you want to visit them, you should plan the trip for no later than mid 2011... It's always nice to be able to sit in the church pews where your distant relatives sat, where part of your history was lived...

I have just received a message from CONNIE telling me about her recent activities. I thought you'd be interested in knowing that she is still being creative by writing, publishing & painting. Read about them in her own words:

I just finished a new minibook (5" x 3.5"). I updated and changed the info in the little one that I made all my myself years ago (called Adapting to Living Alone), whi...ch was directed mostly to women. The new one, for both women and men, is called Surviving Living Alone and it is published by Viovio, a photo-book publisher.I never expected to be able to do this because POD publishers don't do color--and I never found one that made the mini size that I wanted. I have no idea what it will look like, but it's being printed this week.

Talbot received a degree in law from McGill University in Montréal, QC where he began practicing his profession in 1908. In August of 1914, he enlisted in the Canadian military service. He died in BELGIUM in 1917.

Much has been written about Talbot PAPINEAU; therefore, there's no need to add to his biography here. In 2007, there was also a CBC movie produced, THE GREAT WAR, in which Justin TRUDEAU played the part of Talbot PAPINEAU.

According to news reports, NELLY ARCAN's body was found by her live-in boyfriend in her home on St. Dominick St., in Montréal, QC Friday, September 24, 2009. The first police report that I heard over the radio noted that she was 37 years old & that she had committed suicide. Subsequent newspaper articles have given her age as 35 & her funeral home obituary notes that she was 36 years old but her birth year was not indicated. One article lists her DOB as 1973-03-05 but I have no proof of this.

Nelly's birth name was Isabelle FORTIER, the daughter of Germain FORTIER & Jacinthe MERCIER, who were married in Notre-Dame-de-Fatima parish, in Lac-Mégantic, Frontenac County, QC. Her obituary notes that they had 2 children: Isabelle & her brother, Érik.

Apparently, Isabelle left her hometown of Lac-Mégantic in her early twenties to settle in Montréal, where she became a Call Girl. The people, who knew her, claim that she was mentally unstable & suicidal, having attempted to kill herself on several occasions. As a result of these attempts, she was hospitalized now & then.

Isabelle wrote her first book, PUTAIN, under the pen name of NELLY ARCAN. Although a novel, PUTAIN (published 2002) was based upon her experience as a prostitute. It immediately became a bestseller and Nelly's name made the headlines. She was interviewed on radio & television, which brought her more popularity. Some say that the topic of SEX appealed to her readers. Successive novels by Nelly ARCAN were published: Folie (2004), L'enfant dans le miroir (2007), À ciel ouvert (2007) & her most recent novel, Paradis, clés en main (which was scheduled to be published in November 2009). The publisher intends to bring out the book at that date despite Nelly's suicide.

At the time of her death, Nelly was a chronicler on a Montréal television variety show, ICI, on channel VOX. Her co-workers were dismayed by the news of her death, but some commented not being surprised. Youth and good looks were important to Nelly and she was pushing 40 years of age, which seemed to be a problem for her. She had always been a beautiful blond woman and still was, and her physical beauty preoccupied her.

All of NELLY ARCAN's novels seem to be based upon her life experiences, both physical & emotional. I have not yet read any of her books, but I will do so shortly.

well-known QC actors,

shared the same father,

Alonzo "Bozo" BÉDARD

who married Adèle "Addie" BOURQUE (Alexis+Olivine FUGÈRE) in 1912 in Montréal, QC. Addie gave birth to her only child, Rolland, in November 1913. In January 1915, she died of Meningitis.

Three years after the death of Addie, Alonzo married Marguerite AUDET (Alexis+Virginie BOUTHILLIER) in February 1918, who bore 7 children: Jean-Jacques, Marielle, Joseph-Charles, miscarriage, Paul, Marie-Anne, Joseph-Robert-Lucien. Alonzo died in 1945; therefore, Marguerite remarried & died in 1973.

Although born of the same father, Rolland & Paul were not close, nor did the former have much contact with his father's second family. Rolland felt that he was put aside by his step-mother, Marguerite, who, according to Rolland, treated him like a "slave" in that, being the eldest, he had to tend to most of the family chores. Rolland seems to have resented his step-mother to whom he did not speak for several years. He moved out of the family home at a young age & set out on his own.

Rolland's first job was as a tailor's assistant thinking he would eventually learn the trade & open his own shop. He was soon discouraged & went to work for Lasnier's Candle Shop where he made candles by hand-dipping them. This job lasted 4 years. He survived the Depression by doing odd jobs (painting, hanging wallpaper, moving helper, truck driver). From age 17, though, he also had small acting parts in radio plays and continued his career part-time by singing, acting & being a comedian till it became a fulltime job.

Paul, known in the family as "Ti-Paulo," was born in 1924 in Longueuil, QC. He had an easier life than his half-brother, Rolland, whom he admired because of his acting career, which he hoped to emulate. But, already having a BÉDARD actor in the family, Paul was advised to take on a stage name so as not to be confused or compared with Rolland. Paul decided to take the stage name of PAUL BERVAL, the name by which he became known for the rest of his life.

I have recently read the biography of each of the half-brothers and found it fascinating to discover that each, having lived in the same household, had experienced vastly different emotions despite similar surroundings.

1) ROLLAND BÉDARD, COMÉDIEN by André BOULANGER, published in 1984, gives us an intimate look into the psychological effects that living with a step-mother had on Rolland. This aspect of family life was not discussed in his brother's biography.

2) VIVRE POUR LE RIRE, biographie de PAUL BERVAL by Pierre DAY, published in 2004, relates the daily life of a typical blue-collar Québec family living on the south shore of Montréal, QC.

Vol. 137, No. 7 (July & August 2009) covers the ancestry of Pierre LAPORTE, a Québec Minister, who was killed by his kidnappers in 1970. In this article we learn more about Jacques de LAPORTE dit SAINT-GEORGES (Jacques+Marie HAMELIN), who was born in Norcé, a small village in Perche near Bellême and Montargne in l'Orne, west of Paris, FRANCE. He arrived in Canada about 1650 and settled in Montréal, QC. In 1657-09-03, he married Marie DUCHESNE (François+Marie ROLET). Nicole was from Larochelle, FRANCE. Between 1659 and 1682, the couple had 11 children.

Vol. 137, No. 8 (September 2009) gives us a look at François GUIRE, who was born in Thiviers, Périgord, FRANCE in 1611 & who died 1699-09-12 in Québec. A weaver by profession, a farmer and soldier in the Carignan Company, he married a "Daughter of the King" (Fille du Roi), Marie-Michelle DENEAU (Pierre+Jeanne DUPOTEAU) in 1670 in Saint-Ours, Richelieu County, QC. She was from the village of L'Épine in Marne, about 150km east of Paris, FRANCE. François is the ancestor of the GUIRE, DEGUIRE, LAROSE & DESROSIERS.

Alice ROBITAILLE aka ALYS ROBI

International singing star

was baptized ALICE ROBITAILLE and was born 1923-02-03 in Saint-Raymond, a suburb of Québec City, QC, the daughter of Émile and Albina MOISAN. From early childhood, her only desire was to become a famous singer. Her father would enter her in local talent contests, which she won most of the time, a situation which increased her certainty that she would be a star some day. With this in mind, she left her home in Québec City and, at age 13, took the night train to Montréal, without the knowledge of her parents. Arriving in the city with only 5¢ in her purse after having paid the train passage (one way), she purchased a tram ticket to the theatre where Rose OUELLETTE was head of a variety show. Having met Rose once in the past and having been encouraged by her to continue her singing career, Alice took her at her word and entered the theatre where a rehearsal was going on. She went right up to Mrs. OUELLETTE and told her she was there to be part of the show. Although astounded, Rose immediately hired her and even took her into her home since Alice had nowhere to stay and no money to pay for a room.
This was the beginning of Alice's professional career, and she sang with the variety show for 3 years till she was offered a contract in Ontario, etc. By this time, Alice had taken on the stage name of ALYS ROBI by which she is known to this day.
Alys' life is all the more interesting because she unabashedly shared her emotions through the many situational and mental difficulties that she experienced. Her 1990 autobiography, Un long cri dans la nuit: 5 années à l'asile, describes the horrors of life in a Québec mental institution, St-Michel-Archange, following a nervous breakdown, where she was forced to submit to electric shock therapy, cold ice baths, and, eventually, a lobotomy.
Overcoming the isolation of the mental institution where she lived alone in a small cell and where her father visited her but once in 5 years, she managed to hold onto her sanity despite social deprivation. From 1948 to 1953, she continuously told herself that she was an "international singer" and that she would continue her career despite the fears that grew on her during these 5 years.
Of course, by 1953, when Alice was released from St-Micchel-Archange after a successful lobotomy (which was rare), her father came to see her for the second time, to bring her home. After awhile, she overcame the fear of social contacts, which had been brought on by the isolation experienced at the hospital, and she began accepting singing contracts. She now sings occasionally for local institutions despite her age.
ALYS ROBI's life is an inspiration to us all. If she could survive a mental institution and what it entailed in the 1940's and 50's, we should all be able to overcome our daily difficulties and attain our goals.

The DIONNE Quintuplets (1934)

The DIONNE Quints were born in Corbeil, ON in 1934-05-28. The first-known quintuplets to have lived beyond childhood, the DIONNE girls did not have a normal life in that they were exposed to the public during their childhood on a daily basis. Living in a private hospital built for them, they were not allowed much contact with their parents; hence, familial bonds were never experienced and each had emotional and financial difficulties throughout their life. In November 2007, two of the quints, Annette and Cécile, were still living together in Mont-St-Bruno, QC.
Oliva DIONNE & his wife,.Elzire LEGROS, had 6 children before the birth of the Quints: Ernest, Marie-Rose, Thérèse, Daniel, Léo & Pauline, who was born in 1933. After the birth of the Quint, the couple had 3 sons: Oliva, Victor & Claude.
Several books were written about the Quints, including an autobiography at the hands of ANNETTE & CÉCILE. These may easily be found in the Internet.
ANNETTE married Germain ALLARD but they eventually divorced.
CÉCILE married Philippe LANGLOIS and the couple also divorced.
ÉMÉLIE entered a convent where she had a series of seizures. One day, alone in the Infirmary in St-Agathe-des-Mnts, QC, she had a seizure, which caused her to turn over in her bed, face down on the pillow. She thus died from suffocation on 1954-08-06.
MARIE married Florian HOULE (Herman+Rose Alba ROCH) in Montréal, QC on 1958-08-11. The couple divorced. MARIE died in Montréal, QC on 1970-02-24.
YVONNE was a librarian. She died in Longueuil, QC on 2001-06-23.

Alodie Virginie PARADIS

was born 1840-05-12 in L’Acadie, which was then part of the Montréal diocese. It later became part of Saint-Jean County, QC. The 3^rd child of 6 of Joseph PARADIS & Émilie GRÉGOIRE, in the family she was called Élodie.
In 1846, she was sent to the Boarding School of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame in LaPrairie, Qc.
In February 1854, she became a postulant in the convent of the Marianite Sisters in Saint-Laurent, a suburb of the city of Montréal, on the island of Montréal, QC. In 1857-08-22, she pronounced her first vows and took the name of Sister Léonie.
Up till 1862, she taught in the Montréal area. She was then sent to St-Vincent-de-Paul Orphanage in New York. In 1870, She transferred to the American branch of the community of the Sisters of Holy Cross in INDIANA where she taught French & embroidery to the students of St. Marie Academy. Twelve years in the U.S. permitted her to learn the English language. In 1874, she was sent to Memramcook, NB as directrice of a group of young female domestics working at St. Joseph College. At this point, many young girls joined Sr. Léonie in her work; therefore, in 1880, during the General Chapter of the Father of the Holy Cross, who were in charge of the College, dubbed the group of young women domestics as the "Petites Soeurs de la Sainte-Famille." These women took private vows & performed domestic duties in the Colleges run by the Fathers of the Holy Cross. The small community did not have Canonical approval at that time. Then, Msgr. Paul LAROCQUE, bishop of Sherbrooke, QC, asked Sr. Léonie & the “Little Sisters” to staff the seminary and the bishop's house. It was at this point that Sr. Léonie transferred the Mother House and Novitiate from New Brunswick to Sherbrooke. In 1896, the Petites Soeurs de la Sainte-Famille received diocesan approval. Sr. Léonie was still a member of the community of the Sisters of the Holy Cross; but, in 1905, Pope Pius X relieved her of her obligations to that community and allowed her to wear the habit of the community which she had founded in NB, the Petites Soeurs de la Sainte-Famille. At the time of Mother Léonie's death (1912-05-03) in Sherbrooke, QC, there were 600 sisters, who worked in 38 houses.

Ste-Irène church transformed into a museum

On August 1st & 2nd,
the parish church will be ignaugurated
as a museum.

The second wave of colonization in 1933 brought the founders of LAFERTÉ to this area of Abitibi. By 1934, the parish was organized and the church built by 1939. The first pastor was Father Henri PARÉ.
Today there are 300 inhabitants in what is now known as LAFERTÉ/TASCHEREAU, but in the 1950's therre were as many as 1,200 residents.
From 1926 to 1968, a train ran from TASCHEREAU to ROUYN-NORANDA. It is in the process of being "rebuilt" and will be known as "The Green Line."

Sainte-Irène church was officially closed in 2006.

Esther SUREAU dite BLONDIN (1809-1890)

Born in 1809 on her father’s farm on Côte Terrebonne in the city of the same name, Esther BLONDIN lived like other female children of her era. She learned the chores necessary to become a good wife & homemaker.

At age 20, she was hired as a domestic for a village merchant. Soon afterward, she accepted a similar job at the convent of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame (CND), who staffed the local school. It is thanks to the sisters that Esther learned to read & write, knowledge that was not deemed essential by her parents for a daughter. Eventually, Esther entered the community of the CND sisters having been attracted by the lifestyle of the Sisters for whom she worked. She had to leave the novitiate because of illness. Esther then met a former CND novice, who had opened a school in Vaudreuil, QC where she began her teaching career.

In 1850, with the encouragement of the Montréal clergy, Esther founded the Roman Catholic religious teaching community of the Sisters of Saint Anne. As a nun, she was known as Sister Marie-Anne. Esther died in 1890 at the Mother House of the Sisters in Lachine, QC.

Female founders of religious communities in Québec did not have an easy life. Like all women of their era, the sisters were subject to the clergy, who regulated every aspect of their daily life even though they were quite capable of administering schools, hospitals and other social institutions. Despite their abilities, the Sisters were looked upon by the all-male clergy as “inferior” beings, who must be “guided” at all times by the watchful authority of men.

Hence, it may be worth your while to read one or more biographies of such women in QC as Esther BLONDIN. Such reading will bear witness to the influence that the Roman Catholic Church had upon the life of our ancestors in QC during the 17th, 18th & early 19th centuries.

Eugène RICHER dit LAFLÈCHE (1871-1925)

Born April 17, 1871 in Saint-Georges-de-Windsor, Richmond County, QC, Eugène RICHER dit LAFLÈCHE was the son of Jean-Baptiste & Julie GUIMONT/GUIMOND. In 1913, he founded the "Mission de l'Esprit-Saint" (Mission of the Holy Spirit). The word MISSION meaning MESSAGE since it was Eugène's self-proclaimed work to spread the messages of the Holy-Spirit, which, to him, included the teachings of EUGENICS, that became popular in Nazi Germany.
The group took hold in the province of Québec and soon spread to francophone areas in Canada and the U.S. A house in Westport, MA was purchased and members settled in the area during the mid-1920's; but, they have since dispersed.
At the beginning of March 2009, a former member of the mission came forth and divulged her experience of 30 or so years as a member of the MISSION, which is now considered a sect and which is still flourishing in Québec. The Québec government has been "watching" the MIssion for several years because of their unauthorized schooling of members' children, but nothing seems to have been done thus far to shut down these schools.

In return for an amount of money, his father, François, demanded that Daniel bear his mother's surname, SUIRE, that he be baptized in the Calvinist church & that he, the father, be given charge of Daniel at 8 years of age.
After his arrival in New France in 1662, Daniel relized that if he wanted to work in Catholic Québec & marry Louise GARGOTIN, he would have to denounce his religion, which he did in Notre-Dame church on December 6, 1663. He then married Louise (Jacques GARGOTIN+Françoise BERNARD) on February 26, 1664 in Château-Richer, Montmorency County, QC.
Daniel's father, François PERRON, was upset by his denunciation of the Calvinist religion; and he rejected him as his son, thus cutting off all ties as well as his inheritance. This resulted in Daniel's loss of the land his father owned in L'Ange-Gardien, Montmorency County, QC when he died. Nonetheless, in 1674, the court gave François' land in L'Ange-Gardien, to Daniel in return for unpaid work that he had done for his father. On the other hand, François' property on rue Sur-le-Cap in Lower Québec City, was turned over to his creditors. The PERRON family property in L'Ange-Gardien eventually became the inheritance of Daniel's 5 sons:

Délia TÉTREAULT (1865-1941)

On February 4, 1865, twins, Délia and Roch were born to Alexis TÉTREAULT (Alexis+Esther BOULAIS) and Célina PONTON (Pierre+Céleste GIRARD) in Marieville, Rouville County, QC. Although Délia was the more frail of the two, it was Roch, who died at age 7 months. In 1867, Délia’s mother died; therefore, her uncle, Jean ALIX, and his wife, Julie PONTON (her mother's sister), adopted her.
Délia studied at the convent school of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in Marieville. Once she had learned to read, she spent much time perusing the religious magazines that were available at the time. It was thus that she began dreaming of becoming a missionary in distant lands.
At 18, she asked to be admitted to the Carmelite convent in Montréal but she was refused. In October 1883, the Sisters of Charity of St-Hyacinthe, QC accepted her as a Postulant. It was during this period that she heard “the call of God” to found a missionary religious community. She became ill and was sent home where she spent a couple of years caring for her “mother,” Julie. Afterward, she volunteered to help Father PICHON, who worked with immigrants and the destitute in Montréal, QC.
In 1902, Délia began to plan for her missionary future. Msgr. BRUCHÉSI helped her found a training school for missionaries. In 1904, Pope Pius X officially approved the school and transformed it into a religious community known as the Société des Soeurs Missionnaires de l'Immaculée-Conception. In religions, Délia was known as Mère Marie du Saint-Esprit.
In 1933, Délia fell ill and was paralyzed for 8 years. She died on October 1, 1941, leaving behind missionary sisters, who were working in 13 different countries.

Born in Campagnolles, Normandie, FRANCE, Nicolas PINEL married Madeleine MARANDA dit MARAULT in 1630 in Ste-Marguerite-de-LaRochelle. The couple had 5 children:

Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare parish

Ste-Brigide-de-Kildare parish in Montréal, QC, will be closing.

As early as 1850, the Irish population of Montréal was petitioning for an English-speaking parish. Msgr. Ignace BOURGET, bishop of the city, acquiesced and the parish was established in 1867.
The church will be turned into a Community Center. There will be an open-house at the parish on Sunday, October 5, 2008 before renovations begin. Like many Roman Catholic parishes, the building will be used for other purposes.
Although there are still many persons in Québec, who claim to be Catholic, few attend church services regularly, other than for the traditional ceremonies of Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage & Funerals. For this reason, many parishes have merged & others have closed, such as will Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare since expenses may not be met.

From what Bruce remembers, he was on the East Coast of the U.S. on a British naval ship when he received a letter from a U.S. relatives; but, he doesn't recall the name of this female relative, who had recognized his photo in the local newspaper. Also, he doesn't recall whether this stopover was in MA or PA or elsewhere on the East Coast of the U.S.
Any help in researching these LEMONDE's would be appreciated.

He married a "Daughter of the King" (Fille du Roi), Élisabeth AUBERT, the daughter of defunct Michel AUBERT and Jeanne AUBERT, in the parish of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, Québec City in 1670-12-29. Aubin was 38 years of age, his wife, Élisabeth, was 34. According to parish registries, the couple had 10 children:

Joséphine MARCHAND (1861-1925)

Joséphine was born into what could be considered the “privileged” class for French-Canadians of the day. Her father was a lawyer and well-known journalist; but she, as a female born in 1861, was expected to become a wife and mother. Yet, inheriting a love of literature and the ability to write from her father, she did not allow this talent go to waste. She married Raoul DANDURAND (lawyer, politician) and gave free reign to her capabilities under the name of Joséphine DANDURAND. She became a journalist, writer, lecturer as well as a feminist and activist. She died at a young age (1925-03-02) in Montréal and is buried at Notre-Dame-des-neiges Cemetery in that city.

He happened to mention that his dad, WILLIE/WELLIE, had spent a portion of his childhood in Manchester, NH. Louis RIEL (1844-1885) hanged for High Treason

Louis RIEL was born 1844-10-22 in the Red River Settlement of Rupert's Land, now known as the province of MANITOBA. He was the eldest of 11 Metis children. He was hanged in 1885-11-16 for High Treason against the Queen of England and the Dominion of Canada for having led the Northwest Revolution against the government.
Although sincere in his life-long efforts for the rights of the Metis people, he was misunderstood by the clergy of the Roman Catholic church, said to have been mentally deranged, and was feared by the Canadian governments for his influence among the half-breeds and the Metis of Rupert's Land.
He married in the state of MONTANA where he was living in exile for fear of his life. His wife, Marguerite MONET dite BELLEHUMEUR was a Cree woman. They had 3 children, all having died young. The eldest, Jean, married Laura CASAULT in March 1908 in Québec City, QC where Jean had studied to become an engineer. Wanting to return to western Canada, Jean found a job with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway where he worked on a construction site 12 miles from his home in Saint-Vital, MB. One day, on his way home from work, his cart overturned and some ribs were fratured. Although the accident was not considered serious, Jean died from his injuries in July of 1908. He and his wife had no children; therefore, LOUIS RIEL has no direct descendants.

When they didn't purchase anything, he left saying: "You won't forget me." in an angry tone. On the way out of the village, he met the three boys, whom he enticed toward his wagon & pushed them in. Only Pierre survived the adventure that lasted many years.

Éléonore CHARRON (François+Marie-Angélique AYOTTE) founded the Roman Catholic religious community of women known as the Sisters of Sainte-Martha (Soeurs Ste-Marthe) in St-Hyacinthe, QC in 1883. The community's main purpose was to serve priests and seminarians by cooking, sewing and housekeeping. Nowadays, the sisters are also involved in pastoral work and the making of hosts to be used (consecrated) during the celebration of the Eucharist.

Born 1916-11-02, the son of J. A. Camille BOURDON and Albertine DUPUY, died 2007-10-21 at Charles-Lemoyne Hospital in Longueuil, QC. Funeral presided by Msgr. Jacques BERTHELET, C.S.V. at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in LaPrairie on October 26, 2007.
Father BOURDON was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in 1941-03-09 by Msgr. Atanase FORGET at Nativity parish in LaPrairie, QC. He was the oldest priest in the Saint-Jean-Longueuil diocese.
Among other activities, he taught at the Seminary in St-Jean from 1941-1953. He also served as assistant pastor at Ste-Famille parish in Boucherville, QC (1959) & was pastor of Ste-Louise-de-Marillac parish in Longueui, QC (1960) & of St-Edmond parish in St-Jean, QC (1966), pastor of Très-St-Coeur-de-Marie parish in Chambly, QC (1978), as well as assistant pastor at St-Joseph-de-Chambly parish (1985).

Andrée PLAMONDON-BOUCHER

mayor of the city of Québec since 2005 and previous mayor of Sainte-Foy, a susburb of Québec City, died 2008-08-24 at her home of a massive infarctus. Born 1937-01-30 in Québec City, the daughter of Louis PLAMONDON and Alice MONTMINY, she obtained her degree in Education from Laval University.

In 1985, she was elected mayor of Sainte-Foy, a job that she retained for 15 years. In 2005, she was elected mayor of Québec City.

Andrée PLAMONDON married Marc BOUCHER (Gabriel & Thérèse PAQUET) on 1959-08-10 in Notre-Dame-de-Foy parish, Sainte-Foy, QC. The couple had 3 children: Bernard, Denis and France.

Residents of Québec City and the City Council were taken aback by their mayor's unexpected death since her husband had failing health, but she was energetic and seemed tireless. Andrée's priorities were always based upon the welfare of the residents of the city. Concern for them was the basis of all her decisions, and she even intervened personally on their behalf when normal channels proved fruitless. All were welcome, and everyone knew her home address, where, today, there are countless flowers on the lawn as well as in front of the City Hall.

The family has accepted a public funeral. Arrangements are in the offing.

Canadian Home Children

Those of us, who are interested in Canadian genealogy, have eventually come upon the HOME CHILDREN, who were sent from their homeland (England or Ireland) to work for Canadian families. Not much is known about their daily living experiences in Canada in the late 1800's, i.e. not until JEAN LITTLE wrote a novel about 2 of these children based upon much research. Her book, "ORPHAN AT THE DOOR: The Home Child Diary of Victoria Cope," brings you right into the heart of the situation of a Home Child in a strange land and what these siblings lived at the hands of their "employers."
While lexperiencing Canadian life in Ontario with these Home Children, I was also introduced to the author, Jean LITTLE, via the blurb on the jacket of the book. From there I Googled and ended up on her website, only to discover that she is a prolific blind person, who has shared the results of her vivid imagination and thus has helped us to see WITHIN the heart of our fellowmen via her novels.

Father Émilien TARDIF (1928-1999)

Born June 6, 1920 in Saint-Zacharie, Beauce County, QC, Émilien TARDIF was the son of Léonidas & Anna LAROCHELLE. In 1940, the family moved to Rapide-Danseur in the Abitibi region of Québec.
In 1949-09-08 Émilien made profession in the religious community of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC: Missionaires du Sacré-Coeur). In 1955-06-24, he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in Rapide-Danseur. In September 1956, he left for the Dominican Republic where he taught at the Minor Seminary of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, worked for the Amigo del Hogar magazine, was named "superior" of the mission in the Dominican Republic, and in 1971 he became Administrative Provincial of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in that country.
Later, Father TARDIF founded the community of lay persons known as the Servants of the Living Christ (Serviteurs du Christ Vivant), which, in 1999, had more than 300 members. He opened several community homes in the Dominican Republic as well as in the state of Florida in the U.S.
In 1973, Father TARDIF returned to Canada because of failing health and was cared for at Laval Hospital in Québec City, QC. . While in hospital, he met members of the Charismatic Movement. Once cured of his health problems, he began preaching retreats throughout the world.
Father TARDIF's first book: Jésus a fait de moi un témoin, sold more than one million copies. It was translated into 18 languages. He wrote 2 more books before dying in 1999-06-08 while preaching a retreat to priests in Cordoba, ARGENTINA. His funeral was held in the stadium in San Domingo, Dominican Republic, and he is buried in Santiago de Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

Wilfred PELTIER (b. 1927-10-16, d. 2000-07-07) An Odawa aboriginal, Wilfred was born on the Wikwemikong Reserve in Manitoba, CANADA. According to his autobiography, NO FOREIGN LAND : THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A NORTHERN AMERICAN INDIAN, Wilfred changed the spelling of his surname, PELTIER, to PELLETIER at one point in his life, so as to be recognized as of French-Canadian extraction.
Unlike usual autobiographies, Wilfred PELTIER goes beyond relating his life events. He brings us into the Indian mind and allows us to begin thinking like one. What an experience! Being led to see the world through aboriginal eyes is mind-boggling and well worth the experience. Such a point of view removes all pre-conceived notions I had about Indians as well as my judgmental attitude concerning their actions and way of being. Wilfred PELTIER’s autobiography brought me into the very spirit of native North-American life and has opened my mind to who they are from the inside out.

Cross on MOUNT ROYAL in Montréal, QC

In 1643, Paul CHOMEDEY, Sieur de Mainsonneuve, erected a wooden cross on Mont-Royal in thanksgiving to God for having proected the city now known as Montréal, QC, from flood waters. In commemoration of this act, in 1924, a metal cross, 30 meters high, was erected on the exact spot of the original cross. Through the years, the cross has been weather-beaten; therefore, it, and the surrounding area, will be restored in the Spring of 2008. A well-known landmark, the cross is lit up at night and can be seen from many miles, especially on the south shore of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

to adjust to independent living.

The trauma of being catapulted into living alone is understood fully only by those who experience it. Most of those who find themselves in such a situation , for whatever reason and regardless of race or nationality, go through a roller coaster of emotions such as hurt, bitterness, fear, inadequacy, uncertainty, etc. and it takes a long time to adjust to their new condition and status.

For some, it’s like being thrown into a life of loneliness, resentment, and so many other emotions that struggle for attention in the mind, suffocate the spirit, and seem to go on forever. The truth is, however, that these feelings do not have to be lasting because time does heal wounds, life does go on, joy and wonder do return.

Of the millions who have gone through such a devastating change in their lifestyle, some have grabbed on to what they felt were disadvantages to living alone, and they never let go. These persons will never be able to see the rewards that independent living can bring. In fact, if they are glued to the negatives, they will probably never find contentment anywhere.

Others decided to focus on the good things that they discovered, kept their eye on these positive features, and eventually, they found that living alone, temporarily or permanently, can actually be a rewarding experience.

If you’re still grieving, disillusioned, scared, and angry, it’s probably impossible for you to believe this at this time. As the days and months pass, however, you’ll begin to appreciate some of the good features of independent living. For instance, you don’t need anyone’s approval to take a trip or go away for a weekend; you can purchase whatever you want without having to consult a partner; you can have a longed-for pet; you can come home in the middle of the night without having to account for it, etc. This freedom will never replace the person that is gone, but it may help you adjust to your present situation, and you’ll soon see yourself taking steps to a healthy transition from being two to being one.

Maybe your husband/partner wanted to handle all the finances by himself. Or maybe you just didn’t care to get involved in the abracadabra of stocks, mutual funds, CD’s, etc.

If that’s the case, find a reputable accountant or financial planner.

Better yet. Learn about managing your money. Even if you do use a professional, you’ll then be able to keep track of what he/she is doing and have a better understanding of the decisions that he/she makes to keep your portfolio healthy.

If you have only a savings and a checking account, check with the bank to see if you could benefit from CD’s or other financial instruments.

If you’re left penniless (no insurances, or they had been cashed, etc.) do not hesitate to apply for temporary government assistance. Taxpayers are always happy to help people who really need the assistance.
If you still feel guilty, and if you are well and capable, do some volunteer work until you can return to employment.

The article begins with the arrival of Hilaire LIMOUSIN dit BEAUFORT in Québec in 1665. The LIMOUSIN and BEAUFORT surnames are no longer used.

Age of adulthood in QC through the centuries

Many persons have been asking me what the “age of majority” was in New France (Nouvelle France), aka Lower Canada and Québec ,through the generations since parish registries often indicated whether the spouses were “majeur” (mj) or “mineur” (mn) at the time of their wedding.

After a bit of research, I’ve found the following:

From 1620 to 1783 = 25 years of age
From 1783 to 1972 = 21 years of age

From 1972 to date = 18 years of age

I've just found the TANGUAY dictionnaire généalogique des familles canadiennes online. This will certainly be of great help to many of you researchers, who don't own the dictionary nor that of JETTÉ. It lists the founders of NEW FRANCE (QUÉBEC) and their descendants for the period of 1608-1760.
Please note the following abbreviations that you will find in this French dictionary:

Homosexual marriages legal in CANADA

The Catholic Church does not allow its priests to perform marriages of couples of the same sex. Below is a warning to Church Ministers.

Important reminder to state that
Catholic ministers cannot celebrate
exclusively civil marriages

CONSIDERING that a new definition of marriage has been adopted by the Federal Government on July 20,2006;

CONSIDERING as a follow-up to this decision, that Québec bishops, in plenary assembly, deemed it advantageous to remain under the present regime whereby the State grants civil effects to marriages performed in the Catholic Church;

CONSIDERING these civil effects are inseparable from the religious celebration of marriage in accordance with the canonical and liturgical standards in force;

WE WISH TO REMIND the statement of Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil that ministers of the Catholic Church are prohibited from performing marriages that are exclusively civil. Departure from the rule may cause the withdrawal of celebrant’s permit. You may wish to consult page 107 of the Canonical and Pastoral Guide for Parishes on the subject, published by the AQCB.
